Admiral sits on the bluff at West Seattle's north end, above Alki. It was the original town of West Seattle: platted in 1885 and developed from 1888 by the West Seattle Land and Improvement Company. The business district centers on California Ave SW and SW Admiral Way, anchored by the Admiral Theater, a 1942 B. Marcus Priteca remodel that is a designated Seattle landmark, along with shops, grocers, restaurants and coffee shops. The red-brick West Seattle Library (1910), Hiawatha Community Center and Schmitz Preserve Park's old-growth forest are all nearby, and Hamilton Viewpoint looks across Elliott Bay to downtown.
